SENIOR FARM SPECIALIST (READVERTISEMENT)
Nature of Appointment: 12 Months Fixed Term Contract
Salary: R397 116 per annum (Level 8) plus 37% in lieu of benefits
Centre: Haakdoornboom Farm (Temba Campus) – Ref: TNC/TC/26-01/1
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, animal science, or equivalent qualifications with at least 2-5 years’ experience in Operational Environment; preferably Agriculture. Additional courses in business management or administration are recommended.
A valid drivers’ license and computer literacy are a prerequisite. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent Leadership and Management skills, Financial and Human Resources Management skills. Infrastructure inspection knowledge and ability to work additional hours and during weekends. Good communication skills. Willingness to work overtime as required.
DUTIES: Plan and analyze existing operations, crops, livestock, staff, and financial documents and recommending improvements. Preparing plans and schedules for planting and harvesting and ensuring staff and students understands expectations. Visiting the different divisions to inspect crops, livestock, and perform tests on soil and water. Ensuring seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other supplies are regularly restocked. Undertake practical activities, such as driving tractors, operating machinery, feeding livestock or spraying fields. Scheduling repairs, maintenance, and replacement of equipment and machinery. Handling the marketing and sale of products produced on the farm like fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, and grain. Market the farm’s products. Ensuring all staff and students adheres to health and safety regulations. Assisting with the recruitment and training of new staff members.
Collaborating with senior staff to prepare budgets and financial reports. Plan activities for trainee staff, mentoring and monitoring of them thereof. Understand the implications of the weather and make contingency plans. Ensure that farm activities comply with government regulations. Ensure a proper planning for the implementation of ISAT and PAT. Apply Health and Safety standards across the farm estate. Monitor animal health and welfare, including liaising with vets. Maintain knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them. Protect the environment and maintaining biodiversity. Building professional networks and keeping abreast of developments in agricultural science. Apply for funding.
